Your Life Path number is calculated by reducing your birth day, month, and year separately to a single digit or master number (11, 22, 33), then summing those three results and reducing again — masters preserved at every step. That “separately” is the whole game: it’s what separates our convention from the all-at-once shortcut some calculators use, and it’s why two sites can give you two different numbers for the same birthday. Your birth date isn’t your only number, either — the vowels in your name give a separate one, which is the difference between life path and soul urge.
The method, in four steps (worked example: July 29, 1988)

The master 11 in the day position is kept, never reduced — it flavours the reading even though the final Life Path is 8.
Why other calculators give you a different number
Numerology has no governing body, so there’s no single “official” calculation — different tools use different conventions. CosmicShe uses one convention consistently: reduce the day, month and year separately, keep master numbers, then sum. When another calculator returns a different number, it’s usually adding the whole date at once instead.
When the two methods agree, it’s coincidence; when a master number is present, they diverge. The same three birthdays, under both:

Master numbers change the reading materially, so a convention that flattens them lands on a different number. When calculators disagree, ask which convention they use — ours is documented here and shown on every result.
The master number rules, precisely
11, 22, and 33 are never reduced further — not at the day/month/year stage, not in the final sum. An 11 in the day (born on the 29th or 11th) stays 11 into Step 4. A final total of 11, 22, or 33 IS your Life Path — you are not “a 2, basically.” Masters are intensified versions of their base (11→2, 22→4, 33→6): same theme, higher voltage, more homework.
How we check for karmic debt
In CosmicShe’s method, before the final reduction we look at the total itself: 13, 14, 16, or 19 marks a karmic debt — a repeating lesson attached to the chart (13: honest work over shortcuts · 14: freedom used well · 16: truth before ego in intimacy · 19: learning to receive).
Example: born July 1, 1988 → 1 + 7 + 8 = 16 → Life Path 7 with karmic debt 16. The 7 is the path; the 16 is the curriculum. Our calculator flags it automatically.
Common mistakes, quickly
- Using the month’s letters (J-U-L-Y) instead of its number (7) — months are numbers here; letters belong to name numerology.
- Reducing 11/22/33 “to keep it simple” — that’s a different calculation convention from the one we use.

Questions, answered straight
My birthday reduces to 11 — am I an 11 or a 2?
An 11. Masters stop the reduction, full stop. Some traditions write it “11/2” to show the base theme — fine as notation, but the reading is the 11.
Does my Life Path ever change?
Never — it’s computed from your birth date. What changes annually is your Personal Year (birth day + birth month + current year), which is a different, moving number.
Which method is “official”?
There’s no governing body and no single “official” numerology — different traditions use different conventions. We use the reduce-parts-separately convention consistently, because it keeps master numbers intact, and we show every step so you can check ours by hand against this page.
What about the time of birth?
Not used — Life Path needs only the date. Birth time belongs to astrology’s birth charts, not to numerology’s date math.
